WHAT IS AVONDMAAL?

Avondmaal is the brainchild of Willy Beeckmans, an Antwerp-based designer and illustrator who is currently speaking about himself in the third person, because he also wrote this text.

In Dutch, “Avondmaal” literally hints at the evening meal, but also at late-night brain-grinding, which is when most of his work actually happens.

Visually, his work is colourful, character-driven and a bit absurd: soft, rounded shapes, bold lines and small jokes tucked into the details.

VISION

Avondmaal is about playful, character-driven images that sit somewhere between illustration, design and pop culture. Every piece usually starts as a small joke or observation and then grows into something you can actually hang on a wall. The goal is simple: make work that feels light, but sticks in your head.

PROCESS

Each piece usually starts as a drawing, then gets rebuilt carefully for print or production. For art prints I use high-quality paper and inks, sometimes with foil or other special finishes. For clothing and accessories I work with trusted partners who care about detail and durability. Everything that leaves the studio is checked, signed off and something I would be happy to own myself. My perfectionism doesn’t really allow for anything else. I still like to sleep at night.

LIMITED EDITION

I like keeping things special. Most releases are limited runs: once a piece is gone, it stays gone. Each design is created with one clear purpose in mind, whether that’s a print, a garment or an object. Not to create fake scarcity, but because I want each release to feel intentional and a bit like something you were not supposed to

see everywhere.
